What type of drywall is required in a garage?

Utah building code requires 5/8" Type X (fire-rated) drywall on all walls and ceilings shared between the garage and living space — including the door wall, any shared ceiling, and any wall adjacent to a bedroom. Standard 1/2" board is acceptable on exterior garage walls that don't adjoin living space.

Does garage drywall need to be taped and finished?

Code doesn't require a finish-coat level of tape and mud in a garage — it just requires the board to be hung and the joints taped. However, if you're planning to paint the garage, a finish-grade tape and mud job looks significantly better and holds paint more evenly, and we'll discuss the finish level you want and price accordingly.
