About This Service

Resilient channel is the most effective way to soundproof a basement without ripping out framing. By screwing thin metal channels perpendicular to your ceiling joists or wall studs and then hanging drywall to the channel instead of the framing, sound vibrations are physically decoupled — footsteps, voices, music, and TV noise from the floor above are dramatically reduced. We install resilient channel correctly (spacing, screw lengths, and avoidance of short-circuits that ruin the system) and pair it with sound-rated drywall or insulation when the goal is a true home theater or quiet bedroom suite below grade.

Our Process

01

Plan the Assembly

We confirm your soundproofing goal — light noise reduction vs. home-theater isolation — and recommend the right channel, insulation, and drywall combination.

02

Insulate the Cavity

Mineral wool or fiberglass batts are installed between joists or studs to absorb airborne sound before it reaches the channel.

03

Hang Resilient Channel

Hat-shaped metal channels are screwed perpendicular to framing at 24" on center — only into the channel flange, never short-circuited through to a stud.

04

Mount Drywall to the Channel

5/8" drywall (or doubled 1/2" with damping compound for max isolation) is screwed only to the channel, with screws sized so they cannot reach the framing behind.

05

Seal, Tape & Finish

Perimeter gaps are caulked with acoustic sealant, then seams are taped, mudded, and finished to a paint-ready surface — texture matched if tying into existing rooms.
